Alice’s Map Of Montana

Alice is a English learner dreaming of taking an extended riding vacation with her own horse, Vip. This is a great challenge because where she’d like to take this vacation is not close to home!

Alice is planning to travel to Montana in the US, a place of wilderness, mountains, ranches, and home to Yellowstone park.

Her personal project is to put the logistics of her dream vacation together. She must find ranches that will accommodate both her AND Vip, through correspondence/emails, plan how to travel; what is the best and safest way to get a horse to the US? Plan what to take for an extended trip, saddles, reins, outdoor clothing etc, and of course tally the cost of the whole adventure!

We began by exploring the state of Montana by creating a map based on maps and information on Montana we found on the web. We also found 4 ranches that we could email to begin collecting information. The photo above is the completed map which includes the biggest mountain ranges, the locations and descriptions of the 4 ranches, the larger cities and the smaller ones near the ranches. some of the bigger rivers and lakes, plus one volcano! For fun it is embellished with stickers, and hand drawn animals, and of course a photo of herself and her beloved horse Vip!

Alice’s word list is quite long as you can imagine and the sentence structures can be quite complex, but she is forging ahead, learning more words and improving her English as we work on her project!

She is working hard on a fantastic project and a wonderful dream! Can’t wait till I get pictures of her and Vip riding through the Big Sky Country!
